Week 1: Introduction

How's it going everybody? My name is Greg Heigle and I'm a senior Pre-Med student, who happens to be a Letters major. I know this is kind of a weird combination, but I wanted to study more than just biology and chemistry in college, so I decided Letters was the way to go!

I was born and raised in Oklahoma City. Both of my parents graduated from OU, so naturally I'm a huge OU fan. I've gone to games ever since I was little, and I will always bleed crimson and cream. Growing up though, I never really played football, because I was tall and skinny... so I played basketball instead. My greatest accomplishment to date is probably when I dunked for the first time. So when the Thunder showed up in OKC, it was a dream come true. I've loved every minute of going to games and getting to watch my hometown team develop into a perennial championship contender. Sports, without a doubt, were my main focus as a kid, but that's not all I did. I'm also a pretty big nerd! I love reading books like Lord of the Rings or pretty much anything. I also love camping and hiking and rock climbing. However, my favorite thing to do in the world is hang out with my family, especially my younger brother.

I feel like you probably have a pretty good picture of me at this point, but I would be leaving out a major chunk of who I am if I neglected to tell you about my faith. More than anything else I've talked about so far, my faith is what defines me. I grew up going to church, and I would've told you that I had a pretty strong faith. However, I didn't really begin to take my relationship with God very seriously until I got to college. Now, I do my best to introduce my friends to the faith that is so important, and I try to help the guys who are interested develop their own relationship with God. It's the single most fulfilling that I do.

I hope this helped you all get to know me a little better!I I'm looking forward to the rest of the semester

  1. Greg, your post was so enjoyable to read! Pre-Med and Letters are a little different, but I almost got my minor in Letters too and there are some really awesome and fascinating subjects in it! So it's totally understandable. I do have to say though that my favorite part about this post was your last bit about your faith. What denomination did you grow up as? Mine was Baptist. I think it's so awesome how passionate you are about it, and I would definitely have to agree that the faith grew stronger when I got to college; I mean, growing up with Christian friends and family, I'd never really met an atheist, or if I did then I never knew, but I got here and meeting people who didn't believe in God made me want to strengthen my faith and do what I could to lead people to Christ. Anyways, you seem like a wonderful person and I look forward to reading more of your posts!

  2. Hey Greg! I think a Letters major while applying to med school is a pretty interesting combination. I guess it’s nice because it allows you to study an entire range of subjects rather than limiting yourself to just science. And it’s always great to meet a fellow nerd! I’ve never actually read The Lord of the Rings series, since I’m more into Urban Fantasy myself. However, as a diehard bookworm I’d recommend The Emperor’s Soul, by Brandon Sanderson. Even though it’s short, I found it extremely engaging.

  3. That combination of Pre-Med and Letters makes perfect sense, Greg - in fact, that COMBINATION seems to me even more exciting than either one of them on their own. That's one of the reasons why I like these Gen. Ed. classes: when you bring together students from the incredibly wide range of majors and colleges here at OU, good things are bound to happen from all that variety! And it sounds like you might want to do a Bible-inspired project for this class, which would be just great. The word "mythos" in Greek means "story" ... and religious stories are incredibly important stories in every culture, often spreading all over the world, developing new meanings and finding new audiences as the centuries go by. Exciting stuff... but then, I'm such a Letters person at heart - and I hope you will enjoy finding lots of familiar stories along with lots of new stories to read in this class!

  4. Hi Greg, being from Seattle I am not a sore Seattle sonic loser. As most people would say. I think they are doing much better as the thunders. What is it that they say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. My wife came across a t-shirt that said "Seattle we stole your thunder" which I thought was pretty funny. Also when I first came to OU I didn’t realize how seriously people took college football here. But if you was to cut me open now I too just might also bleed crimson and cream. This whole thing is starting to rub off on me.

  5. Hey Greg! Thanks for letting us all get to know you a little better! I am also a Pre-Med student with an atypical major! I think that choosing a major outside of biology or microbiology allows us to have a unique view of medicine and a less limited area of study! Also, congrats on finding your faith in college! Where most students find it difficult to stay plugged into the faith when they move away from home, I really happy that you were able to find yours! Good luck with where your journey's in medicine and in God take you!

  6. Hi Great,
It's nice to get to "meet" you via your blog :) I really enjoyed getting to read your introduction -I love the emphasis that you put on your faith. I think a lot of people are fairly complacent in their faith as they go throughout their years at home, and college is a big eye-opener. It seems as if students go one way or another - they embrace the new season in their lives and make their faith an integral part of it or they seem to fall off of the wagon for a bit. I'm glad you're in the former category :)

  7. Hi Greg!

I loved your intro, you covered all aspects of you in wonderful detail! It's awesome that you've been associated with OU your entire life, I wish I could say the same thing! I'm the first person in my family to not go to LSU, so I guess you could call me a traitor :) I also enjoyed reading about you and your faith. It's a nice change to hear about someone that isn't afraid to talk about God and how much He means to them, don't ever lose that! I look forward to keeping up with your blog this semester and I hope you enjoy your last year at OU!

  8. Hi Greg,

I am actually a senior planning for medical school as well! It's good to find someone else in class who understand the pain of all those science classes. I'm doing Chemical Biosciences as my major, and I definitely can't blame you for wanting a change of pace from all the biology and chemistry. Letters and pre-med seems like a well-rounded and cool choice!

  9. Greg, this was such a well-rounded summary of yourself and I loved reading about your varied hobbies! I'm pre-med as well and I always enjoy meeting older students who want to go into the field as they can give such valuable insight. I definitely think it's great that you're a Letters major; it must be a nice change of pace between science and the humanities.
One thing that impresses me is your boldness in your faith. It is always so refreshing to meet people who are unafraid to declare that they follow Christ, and I greatly admire that kind of courage. :)
Anyway, it was great getting to know a little about you, and good luck with all of your future endeavors!

  10. I think it is so cool that you are a Letters major. I recently visited Carnegie Hall for the first time and there was a huge poster about Letters. I read it and really liked the freedom you have with your major. It looked really interesting and I wished that I knew about it before I decided my major as chemical engineering.

I am too short and small to play basketball, but I definitely appreciate it (GOOOO THUNDER!)!! It’s awesome that you can dunk! My greatest accomplishment in basketball was making a 3 pointer for the first time. It only took 20 years for it to happen. Hahah.

Anyway, you seem like a really cool guy so I’m looking forward to being in this class with you for the semester! ☺

  11. Hi Greg! One thing I’m really enjoying about this class is “meeting” all kinds of OU students and learning about their backgrounds and hobbies. Glad to hear you’ve been a longtime OU fan, I grew up in a college town as well (Lafayette, IN, home of Purdue University) and I’ve found that when you have ties to a school growing up, you’re either going to be strongly drawn there or strongly pushed somewhere else. It seems like it worked out in your favor!

  12. Greg, it was awesome reading about you! You seem like such an interesting guy who is diverse in his interests. I love that you play basketball, that is something huge in my family so I think that is definitely the best sport! Good luck in medical school!

  13. I think it is very smart and interesting that you are a Letters pre-med major. It allows you to really explore some different paths and get a broad education about many different topics. I am an HES major but have taken multiple Anthropology classes because it interests me and I want to have more than just knowledge about cell mechanisms and exercise protocols. I can't relate to you on the love for the Thunder though... Being from Dallas I can't betray my Mavs. But I know how important the Thunder is to Oklahoma, and with your basketball background I am sure you are an avid fan. I am glad to hear that you find fulfillment through spreading the word of Christ. It is a humbling and amazing thing to be fulfilled by.

  14. Greg,

One of my best friends is a letters major! She is studying abroad in Spain right now. Although, she is pre-law, not pre-med. You have an interesting major choice! I took a letters course my freshman year. I think it is great that you have such faith! I was baptized 2 years ago and let Jesus into my heart a year before that. So, I am still very new! I also love hanging out with my family. I don't like living two hours from them. Your hobbies sound fun. I also like camping, but not in Oklahoma. Hope to get to know you better over the semester!

  15. Hey Greg! What part of okc are you from? I am from Oklahoma City as well, and much like you, I am a huge thunder fan! I was even a Thunder Girl Finalist a year ago! I love everything about the Thunder, especially how much they have made our city unite and grow stronger together. Well I wish you the best of luck this semester! It was great getting to know a little bit about you!

  16. I was also raised on OU football since my parents and uncles all went here. When I graduated high school, I didn't even bother to apply anywhere else. Also, I am glad that you made it clear how important God is in your life. It is good to see that you're not afraid to share that with people. Also, don't feel weird about the odd combination of majors, I am getting a chemical engineering degree and then going straight into law school. You're allowed to like more than one area of study.

  17. Greg,
My friend did the same thing you did! He was Letters/Pre-Med also! What a small world. I think that's really cool that you did something completely different than science. Plus, I heard that med schools like that too because it shows that you're well-rounded and didn't just focus on science like most pre-med students do.
I think it's awesome that your faith really developed when you came to school. It's the exact opposite for a lot of people, so that's cool that you let it grow.

  18. Hi Greg!

I loved reading your introduction. You seem like a fun guy. I also love love LOVE the Thunder because obviously they are the greatest team EVER. I am glad we have that in common :) I love that you are so open about your faith. That is such a great characteristic to have especially while you are in college. I feel like a lot of people forget about their faith during their time in college. Good luck in the last part of this semester! I look forward to reading your story this week.

  19. Hello Greg! I think it is really cool that you played/play basketball! I actually did too! The biggest moment in my basketball career was just making a free throw... I wasn't very good to say the least... I was a killer guard, but a horrible ball handler... I think it is really cool that you are so sound in your faith! It is always good to have comfort in that! It was great meeting you! I look forward to reading your stuff!

  20. Hi, Greg! I like watching basketball also. I played one year in middle school but I was awful. I also like reading pretty much anything. I've always loved the Lord of the Rings movies but never got around to reading the books until recently. I'm almost halfway through the second. I think it's great your a letters major. It seems like that would be an interesting and unique area to study. Good luck on the rest of your semester!

  21. Hey Greg, first of all it is always exciting to meet a fellow Oklahoma City Thunder fan. This season has been a bit of a struggle so far, but I have faith in our team. I played basketball when I was in middle school and my freshman year of high school. After that I stopped playing other sports and focused solely on soccer. Good Luck with the rest of the semester!
